The Run Down’s elite runner of the week.

Name: Dean DobberteenDean_1_3

Favorite cartoon character(s): Wallace and Gromit.

Eat healthy or whatever? I eat healthy – I cook a lot of different foods. I used to work at a cooking school.

Lima beans, soy beans, pinto beans or couscous? Definitely pinto beans! Bean and rice burritos on the trail.

Pizza topping? Pepperoni & extra pineapple chunks.

You find a diamond ring on the trail. What do you do? Immediately sell it on eBay when I get home.

Clean car or messy car? I have a clean van: everything is in the right spot.

Who has the best looking legs you’ve seen? Anne Langstaff and Dirty Girl Xy Weiss.

PC or Mac? PC

Hometown: San Diego, CA

Family (spouse, kids, etc.): I have a mom, dad and a brother.

Running motto/quote: "Don’t Dean IT"

Running PRs: 5K: 17:03; 10K: 35:40; Marathon: 3 hrs 1 min; 50 km: 4 hrs 8 min; 50 miles: 7 hrs 35 min; 100 km: 10 hrs 2 min; 100 Miles: 27 hrs (only 19 yrs ago); 24 hours: 86 miles; 12 hrs: 78 miles.

Average miles run per week: 85 and I run anytime.

Favorite place to train: San Gabriel and/or Cuyamaca mountains.

Ultras per year: 13

Number of completed ultras: 56

Can you sleep the night before a race: Hell no, I just lay down in my van for a few hours.

Most memorable ultra performance and why: I beat the legendary Rob McNair in the 2003 Wild West 50K and won the race. My other memorable experience is when I ran the Bulldog 50K in 2005 and got 4th place after not racing for 2 years 2 months and 15 days; I cracked my femoral neck and 3 doctors, 2 chiropractors, 4 massage therapists and everybody else told me to never run again. I ended up avoided a hip replacement and screws so screw them all!!

How many times have you DNFed?: I don’t want to admit this, but I have DNFed in 11 races and DNSed in 12 races. I’ve had many injuries, lack of sleep, overtraining and cramps. Most of all, I’ve been known to start out too fast then die. My friends in the Bad Rats have each saved my life at least once.

Favorite food/drink during an ultra: Grape and Peach Cytomax, Clamato, Gu, Clif Bloks, rice and eggs, turkey avocado wraps.

What’s in your MP3 player: A mix of music including Kid Rock, ZZ Top, Metallica, Johnny Cash, Dandy Warhols, Crystal Method, Rob Zombie, Monster Magnet, Rage Against the Machine, and soundtracks, 80’s music, and classic rock.

Pet peeve: Smoking, locked restrooms, people who don’t tip after their rickshaw ride.

Favorite web site: eBay, ESPN.com, cbssportsline.com, amazon.com

Favorite ultra: Lost Boys 50 mile (before the area burned down)

I run because: It’s what I do and who I am.

If I couldn’t run anymore I would: Get into trouble. Also, I would get a real job and not run out of money every five days.

The running world needs to: Pay ultra-runners.

Other hobbies: cooking, fantasy baseball, audio books when I drive, reading sci-fi, baseball games, movies.

Personal philosophy: Run as fast as you can until you can’t then go slower.

  1. Cool interview. But your forgot to ask – single or taken? ;)
Dean you rock. I’m impressed the docs told you never to run again and here you are…

  2. Hollywood Rickshaw Rocker Dean,
    Your interview was ultra fabulous.
Where is my rat boyfriend? You know the one from the Lake Hodges finish line? What a crack up. Where in the world did you obtain such a rodent?
And the next time you have Brad Pitt in your rickshaw, you are calling me. We will convert him to a non-smoking running machine.
    Way to FLY at Holcomb!!

  3. Kirk Fortini says:

Man, Dean, there’s nothing I can say that would do justice to the guy that I’ll see at the races for all of about 20 seconds before he disappears from sight.
Though your running says a lot, it’s good to see your words in print.

  4. Robert Blair says:

    Impressive!
    Good job, Dean!
