I was told by my orthopedist I'd have to have a knee replacement if I continued ultra-running. He injected cortisone and gave instructions to not run for ten days. He then asked me if I planned to run Western States.
"Uh huh," I replied.
"And when is it?"
I offered a sheepish grin. "Next Saturday..."
He shook his head and said "You guys are all alike."
That was about twenty years ago! He's retired and my original knees are still working - a lot slower and a bit louder, but working none the less!

I just come over to your site from OnePinkFuzzy.
Fabulous post! I'll take arthritis, knee pain and the infinitesimal risk of hyponatremia over obesity, high blood pressure and heart disease any day!
My mother actually tried to tell me that I was at increased risk of developing skin cancer because of training outside in the sun! Oh my God!
It is very interesting that we as a society criticize and tease healthy people but yet ignore the health crisis in American (and the western world for that matter).
Keep up the good work.

I think that many of those comments about ruining ones knees or having a heart attack while running are also seeded in subconscious envy and guilt.
